Christianity has had influence on many major motion pictures from “The Ten Commandments” to “The Robe” and from “Jesus Christ Superstar” to “The Passion of the Christ”. A recent movie “Alone but Not Alone” tells the story of two women who remain steadfast in their faith during the difficult times of the war between the French and Native Americans in the New World. The movie itself did not draw too much attention. However the song of the same title did when it was nominated an Oscar for the Best Song category and then later revoked. The song is truly inspirational and well suited to the story line, but a technicality had the song removed from the list of nominations in January.

Son of God

The latest offering “Son of God” promises to draw more attention to the life of Jesus, his inspiration as well as his sacrifice. The film tells the story of Jesus from his birth to his death. The movie stars actor Diago Morgado as Jesus. It has been a decade since the last picture about Jesus was produced. The movie produced by Mel Gibson was actually at the root of much controversy with complaints the movie depicted Jewish people as the killers of Jesus. “Son of God” is beautifully filmed and may attract attention based on its filming and meaning as opposed to controversy. Surprisingly the movie is produced by Mark Burnett the brains behind the television hit that changed reality TV, “Survivor”.

Learning Opportunity

The movie will provide an excellent learning opportunity for Christian groups to share together and use as a basis of discussion. Movies are an excellent way to tell a story and encourage people to find faith through inspiration when they see Jesus appear larger than life. The life of Jesus is a prolific insight into how we all should live, but his death and resurrection are the defining moments that inspire faith.
