The story of Jesus approaching the disciples across the water has an important message. As the son of God Jesus was able to walk on water and as he approached and Peter saw it was Jesus his faith was strengthened. Unfortunately as is common for man, when he asked if he too could walk on water Jesus invited him to walk to him. Peter jumps onto the water and begins to walk yet when the waters are too stormy his resolve is weakened and he begins to sink. The message here is an important one as it teaches us that when we are faced with stormy waters we must see our faith through and cling to it with the belief we will be able to weather the storm.
Peter cries out to Jesus to save him when he slips into the waves. Although Jesus does reach out his hand to save Peter he says, “You of little faith.” Jesus knows that if Peter had believed he could walk on water he would have reached Jesus without slipping under the waves.
This tells us that with faith we are able to remain confident that God will continue to watch over us even when things do not seem to be going our way. From the deepest and saddest of moments to moments of great joy God is always there for us. Peter did not maintain his faith when he looked at the stormy waters at his feet which caused him to sink into the water. Yet even without faith and clearly displaying to Jesus he did not believe Jesus could guide him through the stormy waters Jesus still reached out his hand to help Peter. This showed Peter that despite his disobedience or lack of faith God would still be there to help.
